The Ntungamo municipal council has today cut down over 15 acres of Eucalyptus trees belonging to the Woman Member of parliament Ms. Beatrice Rwakimari allegedly planted in a reclaimed area that used to be part of the greater Kyamate wetland.
The trees were cut down by a team of municipality law enforcement officers, political leaders and civil servants headed by the Town Clerk Mr. Christopher Ahimbisibwe.
Ms. Rwakimari together with other residents reclaimed the entire part of the wetland that has a water source taking water to River Kagyera leaving the formerly predicament currently has no water at all only for the passing river.
Several of her employees have since taken up a job to turn the cut down trees into timber. She could however not be reached for comment.
Mr. Ahimbisibwe said the municipal authorities were following up the presidential directive to restore the reclaimed area and at least 80% of the trees have been cut down so far.
He says the encroachers are expected to meet the cost of restoration by refilling the dug drainage channels and completely eliminating Eucalyptus trees planted in the wetland.
