The Ntungamo District National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) officer Glory Mugizi has expressed worry over the low turn up of the residents for the ongoing registration to get National Identity Cards across the country.
Recently, National Identification Registration Authority (NIRA) launched a three-month exercise aimed at rectifying errors existing on national identity cards which will be done, alongside the registration of persons above 16 years who could have missed the initial mass registration exercise undertaken in 2014.
However, Mugizi noted that since the exercise started on February 13th this year in Ntungamo District, few people have shown up attributing it to requirements such as local council one letters and rainy season.
He is urging people to embrace the exercise saying that it will end early May this year and reiterated the need for the IDs because it is a very important document that will be prerequisite for accessing payroll and other government services.
Mugizi also decried at the piles of unclaimed National Identity cards in their offices noting that Over 13,000 national identification cards are still unclaimed despite repeated appeals.
The issuance of national IDs to citizens was launched by President Yoweri Museveni in December 2014 and it rolled out to districts in the country.
The exercise is estimated to cost Shs 7 billion.
