Christopher Bakashaba, the Independent Candidate in the Nyabushozi County Parliamentary seat has petitioned the Electoral Commission over numerous irregularities during the election process that led to the opponent’s win.
Bakashaba who was contesting against three other candidates lost to National Resistance Movement-NRM’s Wilson Kajwengye Twinomugisha.
Kajwengye polled 24061 votes to claim the seat against Bakashaba’s 11931 votes; others are Isaac Kivuna 292 votes and Apollo Tumusiime of ANT Party 36 votes.
Bakashaba in his petition to the Electoral Commission Chairperson contends that the district registrar erred in the declaration forms that they used to declare his opponent Kajwengye Twinomugisha Wilson.
He says that some of the declaration forms were not signed by his agents and the agent’s opponents but the results were used on the transmission results form.
Through his lawyers of Matovu Suwaya & Co. Advocates Bakashaba also says that the Electoral Commission nominated a person who has twelve names and yet they nominated a person with three names.
“We were contesting with a shadow not a person. I actually wonder how this person was nominated. We even think he might have not presented his academic papers because all his documents have different names”. He says.
Bakashaba contends that his opponent has different names on different documents including his National Identity card.
He says that his National Identity card carries the name of Kajwengye Twinomugisha Wilson, while his education documents carry the name of Twineomugisha K Wilson and his bachelor’s degree carries the name Wilson Twinomugisha.
Bakashaba now wants the electoral commission to present the documents used by his opponent during his nomination.
Bakashaba says they have now petitioned the electoral commission to announce the rightful person Bakashaba Christopher since Kajwengye Wilson Twinomugisha does not exist anywhere.
Bakashaba who also participated in the NRM party Primaries and lost to Kajwengye returned as an independent candidate in the general election.
A comment from Wilson Kajwengye was not readily available since his known phones went unanswered.
Section 15 of the Electoral Commission Act, gives the commission powers to resolve complaints submitted in writing in regard to any irregularity of any aspect of the electoral process. The same Act allows the Commission to take the necessary action to correct the irregularity and any effect it may have caused.
