Women’s leadership in business is critical to driving significant economic opportunities and better performance, as well as broader, long-term benefits for society and the environment.
“Companies that continue to have male-dominated leadership will miss out on business opportunities unlocked by gender-balanced teams,†said Paul Polman, CEO of Unilever and member of the Business Commission. “At the current pace, it will take 217 years to achieve gender equality – and that’s bad news for economy and society.
One study found that If women were to participate in the economy identically to men, they could add as much as US$28 trillion to global annual gross domestic product by 2025. There is also evidence that businesses with more women in high-level management positions, particularly on directorial boards, are better able to shift their business’s focus from maximising short-term profit to achieving longer-term growth goals.
Since the outbreak of Corona virus (Covid-19), which has spread to almost all nation’s in the world, resulting into many infections and several deaths, taskforces at national and lower units have been constituted.
In Uganda, H.E. the President Gen. Y Museveni put in place a national taskforce headed by the Prime Minister, Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda and several committee members including Minister of Health Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng, Minister for Presidency Ms Esther Mbayo, Minister for Kampala Capital City Authority – Ms Betty Amongi and several others supported by the technical staff from different ministries.
The taskforce developed and issued guidelines for managing and curbing possible spread of the virus to wider sections of the community. The Minister of Health continuously updated the country on the spread and how the measures put in place were yielding positive results.
Along the way, there was need to give good to most vulnerable people. The office of the prime minister was to lead in the procurement of the food relief for those vulnerable people. The process of procurement is said to have been characterised by corruption arising from inflating unit costs of foodstuffs. Lt.col Edith Nakalema was quickly instructed by the President, and her actions resulted into the arrest of several officers.
While all this was happening, the need to mobilise resources to supplement government efforts was eminent. Hon. Mary Karooro (Minister for general duties – office of the Prime Minister) was appointed to lead the mobilisation team.
With all these efforts and initiatives, and by God’s grace as a country we have registered only 53 positive corana virus cases as of 11 April 2020, with no single death reported, and apparently with no new infections. We also got good news that 3 of the infected had healed and been discharged from their treatment centre.
With all this happening, H.E the president YK Museveni, Maama Janet Museveni and the Prime Minister were providing the necessary support and guidance.
I would like to applaud the good work so far done by the taskforce under the good leadership of the Prime Minister, but more especially to the women leaders on the team who have done a commendable job.
As we move forward, let’s educate the girl child, let’s involve women for better leadership, for a better world.
Finally, to all women out there who have sacrificed to ensure a better society and a better tomorrow, you are my HEROES.
