OVER 20 KABALE TRADERS DEMAND POLICE FOR COMPENSATION OVER THEIR DAMAGED FRESH BEANS

In Kabale—
Over 20 fresh bean dealers in Ndorwa West County in Kabale district are demanding Police to compensate them for their spoilt beans.
The traders under their umbrella Kahungye-Buramba-Ryakarimira Fresh Food Vendors Association say that police impounded their fuso vehicle on Monday at Kigongi in Kabale town around 08:00 pm alleging that they had some smuggled Caro light cream.
The Angry traders claim that their vehicle was taken to police for inspection after which their beans were left to the rain after the alleged smuggled Caro Light cream was not found.
On Tuesday 16th Feb.2021 afternoon, the traders stormed the police station demanding for compensation, in that their beans had lost value after being hit by rain.
Ian Byaruhanga, Chairperson Kahungye-Buramba-Ryakarimira Fresh Food Vendors Association, says that the lorry was carrying bean pods worth Shillings 30 million.
He argues that since police sabotaged their business, it should compensate the traders for the losses of the damaged beans.
Honest Tumuhereze, another affected trader reveals that they had bought the bean pods from farmers on credit.
However, Elly Maate, the Kigezi Region Police Spokesperson, says police are supposed to impound and search vehicles suspected of transporting smuggled goods.
He noted that although no contraband was found on the impounded truck, police will not take responsibility of compensating the traders for the damaged beans..
Caro light cream is one of the banned skin products in Uganda.
