Over 300 inmates remanded at Kakiika and Mbarara central government prisons yesterday benefited from plea bargain program that is meant to reduce case backlog in courts.
The inmates, who included sixty seven women, are charged of different capital offences ranging from defilement, rape, murder, robbery among others.
Addressing in mates on the plea bargain process, Principal Judge Dr. Yorakamu Bamwine asked judges not to allow defense lawyers and inmates take advantage of plea bargain to undermine justice.
He said justice is a privilege that must reflect the interests of all parties involved in an offence adding that giving light sentences to offenders who have pleaded guilty just to reduce case backlog is not fair because majorly cases that are capital in nature attract death sentences.
He was talking to inmates at Mbarara central prison before they entered into a plea bargain process that was witnessed by officials from the Universities of Pepperdine, Yale in USA and those from International Justice Mission.
