Over 80 employees of China Railway Number 5, Construction Company undertaking the tarmacking Bulima-Kabwoya road this morning protested over delayed payment of their salaries and unsecured jobs.
The workers who included casual workers and subcontractors who claimed to be demanding over sh500 million say some haven’t been paid for the last three months and other job related benefits.
They stormed the offices of China Railway Number 5 offices in Buhamba demanding answers over the pending issues.
They were however later calmed down by Kikuube Residence District Commissioner Amlan Tumusiime who intervened in the issue.
Tumusiime held a crisis meeting with the company officials and later addressed the angry workers saying they had resolved to convene a meeting tomorrow with the affected parties to solve the issue but cautioned against violence.
Alex Ngabirano, the head of the sub-contractors claim they were constructed by the Chinese company to execute construction services but they have for long not issued payments to them yet their workers are demanding.
Some of the workers claimed that they were stopped from work and asked to keep around that they would be recalled but they don’t earn anything nor are their arrears paid.
Workers also raised concern over failure by the company to remit their NSSF contribution for the land about a year, breach of contractual obligation citing no yearly leaves among others.
