At least 3 patients run away from hospital to traditional healers and churches for prayers in a week due to too much pain.
According to the Fort Portal regional referral Hospital director Florence Tugumisirize, patients ran away from hospitals because they want to relieve themselves from suffering or pain.
Florence noted that this has led to some deaths giving a case in point of a 17 year old boy suffering from terminal liver who was taken away from hospital by his relatives for prayers and died immediately.
She disclosed that the majority run to traditional healers, churches for prayers due to physical, spiritual or psychological pain.
Dr. Florence explained that the habit of running away from hospitals is most common in male ward and Neonatal.
However, in a bid to curb the problem, an NGO identified as palliative care Association of Uganda, a medical care focused on improving the quality of life of patients with serious illnesses by treating symptoms and providing emotional support has intervened.
According to Dr. Jackson Amone, the commissioner clinical services ministry of health said that palliative care approach will improve the quality of life of patients and their families facing the problems associated with life-threatening illness.
He noted that this will be done through prevention and relief of suffering by means of early identification , impeccable assessment and treatment of pain.
