Security personnel yesterday blocked Ndorwa west FDC MP Flag bearer Geoffrey Nzaana from entering Karujanga and Kibuga parishes in Katuna town council for his campaign.
Nzaana, who was scheduled to meet his supporters at Karujanga playground at midday, arrived at the Katuna border checkpoint manned by police personnel at 10:30 A.M.
On Friday morning, he set off to start his campaign as it’s designated by the electoral commission in Ndorwa west. However, on reaching the Katuna border post police checkpoint in Katuna town council about 20.1 kilometers to Karujanga ward at around 10:30 am, he was intercepted by Uganda Peoples Defense Forces (UPDF) soldiers and policemen who had mounted a roadblock.
Police officers under command of Brain Ampeire, the Kabale District Police Commander ordered him to go back to Kabale town or else wait until further notice.
According to Brian Ampaire, Nzaana was not supposed to have a campaign in Katuna town council on Friday since police were not aware about his rally.
He adds that a candidate was supposed to write a letter to police in order to inform them where he was to campaign from so that police could be deployed in the area to implement SOPs.
A heated exchange between Nzaana and police officers ensued with Nzaana arguing that it’s illegal and against laws for police men to block him from going on with his campaign yet it’s on his time table.
Nzaana says that the role of security is to make sure that campaigns are peaceful but not threatening violence because each of the candidates submitted a campaign timetable to the EC that he is supposed to adhere to.
Nzaana after two hours at the Katuna border checkpoint continued with his trip to Karujanga and proceeded to Kibuga for campaigns but found majority of his supporters had gone home after waiting for him for long.
