PROF. KARORO DISCUSSES MANAGEMENT OF PRIVATE UNIVERSITIES IN UGANDA

Prof. Emmanuel Karoro has called upon private universities owners and managers to provide good leadership and respect human resource that makes them succeed.
He said this today Dec. 03, 2024 while presenting a paper on management of private universities in Uganda at Valley University of science and Technology[VUST] in Bushenyi town.
Prof. Karoro who is a director of post graduate studies at the above university as well as prof. of education at Uganda Christian university told the top leadership of VUST that a university should never be run as a secondary school.
He hailed the Vice chancellor of VUST Dr. Enos Rwanshema for always consulting staff before decisions are taken. He said this is key in management of a private university.
In the presentation, he also applauded the university secretary Mr.Janan Mukaira for paying staff salaries on time. He said that what is killing private universities is failure to pay staff even at worst for a whole semester.
While responding to prof. Karoro’s presentation, Dr. Innocent muramuzi a staff a VUST told the meeting that In Rwanda, if a university takes three months without paying its staff, the government takes over.
Prof. Karoro noted that in some private universities, vice chancellors are powerless. He Gave an example of one university where he was a VC and he could not even order buying anything even a pen. He was only meant to chair Friday meetings. He resigned.
He said that there are over 52 private universities in Uganda.
