“YOU PROMISED US AIR”–KABALE LEADERS TELL MUSEVENI

In Kabale–
Locals and leaders in Ndorwa west Kabale district are bitter over
president Museveni’s failure to fulfill his pledge of buying a ferry.
In 2015, presidential campaigns, President Yoweri Museveni pledged to
buy a ferry for Lake Bunyonyi in Kabale district to reduce the number
of people losing their lives into the lake.
In Mar 2017 the prime minster of Uganda; Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda directed
the ministry of finance to look for funds to procure a ferry that will
operate on Lake Bunyonyi but all in vain. Since then, the leaders
‘s hope to have the ferry started dwindling.
Gad Tumuhimbise; a canoe rider at Lake Bunyonyi says that people living
around the Lake are concerned over the lack of safe and reliable means
of transport.
He says that motorized boat operators plying the lake
charge between 5000 and 50,000 shillings depending on the distance of
the travelers.
The leaders led by the Chairman Ndorwa west leaders’ forum; Can. Enock
Kazooba says that people still use ordinary canoes for transport on
this lake, which has resulted in rampant fatal accidents especially at night.
Kazooba who is also mayor Ryakarimira town council says that they want
the ferry procured to save innocent people.
The State Minister of Finance for Planning, who is also the area
Member of Parliament; Hon David Bahati says that in this financial
year, they have allocated $58Million US dollars to procure the ferry
and tarmac Rwakaraba-Bunyonyi road.
He says that government will ensure the two projects are fulfilled soon since they are in NRM manifesto.
