Business at Kijura market came to a standstill yesterday morning after the Railways Manager Masindi attempted to evict vendors from Kijura Market in Kijura trading centre.
The scuffle started when the Railways Manager Monica Kugonza stormed Kijura Market stopping vendors from displaying their goods.
Monica Kugonza said that Masindi municipality has not been paying railways management for three years which has forced her to allocate lockups to new people.
The vendors accused Kugonza of bringing new changes in the market like paying 20,000 shillings to Railways per month and also allocating lockups to new people leaving out the people who have been working in the market for years.
The new changes irked Kijura market vendors and turned rowdy until police came into quell the situation. The vendors say if she is to allocate lockups she should give priority to the people who have been working in the market for years but not the new ones.
The angry vendors promised to remove the new lockups brought by Monica Kugonza but she warned them not to touch anything or else first consult her before acting.
One of the officials from Masindi municipality who spoke on condition of anonymity at the scene explained that it is true that Railways is demanding them for three years but did not reveal the amount.
He condemned the manner in which Kugonza acted saying that she would have followed the right procedures instead of disorganizing the vendors. He added that an individual does not own a market but she should engage municipal authorities such that they can settle the matter amicably.
