Authorities in Nyakagyeme sub- County in Rukungiri district have appealed to the local and central governments to speedily fix the Baskia Bridge that was submerged 3 years ago following the heavy rains.
The Nyakagyeme sub- county LCIII chairperson Henry Ngatireyo in an exclusive interview with www.mknewslink.com said that the government should consider constructing a bridge that was taken away by flood and debris saying that the current temporary tree poles bridge is not sustainable.
“Six years ago, this very bridge collapsed and the locals opted to construct a temporary tree pole bridge and now it is down again and the sub- County is unable to fix it” Ngatireyo said.
Ngatireyo said 2 years ago, executive members of Nyakagyeme sub- County went to the district and met with the district engineer over the submerged bridge and were promised that it would be fixed soon, but up to now there is no development.
Ngatireyo called upon local leaders and Members of Parliament to jointly push for the fixing of the bridge before the Christmas festival.
The Rukungiri District roads chairperson, Hon. Fred Turyamuhweza who is also the Rujumbura Member of Parliament said they have agreed with Uganda National Roads Authority to make comprehensive designs before importing geo-textile materials to fix the submerged floating bridge.
Meanwhile, youth in the area have capitalized on the situation to make money.
They carry people on their shoulders across the river at a cost raging between Shs2, 000 and Shs5, 000 depending on the weight of the individual.
“We earn about Shs30, 000 per day. If the crisis persists, we shall be very rich by Christmas,” Wilson Agaba a resident, said.
