RESIDENTS BLOCK KAMPALA – GULU HIGH WAY, DEMAND FOR HUMPS

Residents of Kigumba town council in Kiryandongo district on Thursday evening blocked Kampala -Gulu high with stones way protesting the delay by UNRA to put humps in the black spot areas which has led to the increased accidents along the high way.
The residents closed the road for over 30 minutes saying that people are dying day and night but nothing is being done.
The residents want humps to be put ten black spots like; Wakisanyi trading centre, Kigumba town council, Kiryandongo town council, Chopelwo, Jeja trading centre, Nyakagando trading centre.
Others are Masindi port trading centre, Nanda village, Kitaleba trading centre, Kcwabugingo, Katulikire trading center and Diima village.
The furious residents were calmed by the chairperson LCV Kiryandongo district, Charles Ntairohoki, pleaded with them to un block the road.
He added that he wrote to UNRA in May this year and gave them an ultimatum of one month to have put the humps in the black spots but he didn’t get any response thus resorting to soliciting funds from locals.
Ntairohoki noted that since January this year over 70 people have died on Kafu to Karuma stretch along the Kampala-Gulu high way explaining that most of the accidents are caused by over speeding.
He added that people have already started contributing items saying that he has so far got 24 bags of cement, 18 tons of stone dust, food among others, adding that on 15th July they are going to start putting humps in all the black spots with the support of the locals.
Residents also pledged to contribute towards the construction of humps saying for them they are ready to contribute whatever it takes.
Farouk Tumusiime, the mayor Kigumba town council, also indicated that the rate at which people are dying along Kampala – Gulu high way is alarming adding that UNRA must act very fast to by putting humps in the identified black spot.
