At least over 1000 people from four villages of Karambi parish Karambi Sub County are jubilating after the Ugandan government rescued them from being evicted through buying them land.
In 2011-2014, one Christopher Winyi also a resident of the same area threatened to evict his tenants from his mail land claiming that people were not giving him his annual ground rent which he also claimed to be little.
The land in question is block 7 plot 82 Burungu Bunyangabu Karambi of 157-1800 hectares.
According to residents Winyi wrote to them letters requesting the occupants to buy themselves or else they vacate his land.
The residents state that through the interventions of their leaders led by the Karambi district councilor Joseph Mashuhuko Winyi was advised to apply to the government so that it buys his land instead of evicting people.
According to the 1998 land act, it hinders one to evict a person that has spent more than 10 years on the land.
However during the meeting that has been held at Busokwa trading center, in the new vision January 2017 that was read to the residents by the area district councilor Joseph Mashuhuko, government bought over 440 land owners including Winyi.
Tusant Katoma an elder commended the government for saving them from being evicted saying that it would have been hard for them to look for where to start from.
Muhanda Wilson from Kibworo asked the government to come and open for them boundaries as they also look for land tittles.
Mugisa Topher the area chairperson land committee Karambi sub county has praised Mashuhuko comparing him with a savior for the people of Karambi Sub County.
Mugisa has disclosed that some leaders only come for votes but in times of trouble they don’t appear anywhere.
