RUBANDA TO JOIN NATIONWIDE TEACHERS’ STRIKE ON MONDAY

Teachers in Rubanda district have been called upon to participate in the forthcoming nationwide teachers’ strike, should the government fail to meet their demands.
The call was made by the Western region Uganda National Teachers Union-UNATU Chairman Alex Kwikiriza presiding over the a one day education membership workshop held at Rubanda mixed primary school in Ikumba sub county Rubanda district. The workshop was intended to equip teachers’ representatives’ with the knowledge and information concerning UNATU, and status quo of the forthcoming strike.
He said that as teachers’ umbrella body proposes that a head teacher be paid 3 million shillings, Deputy Head teacher 2.5million shillings, graduate teacher 2 million shillings, Diploma teacher 1.75 million shillings, and a grade III teacher 1.5 million shilling per month.
Kwikiriza said that the teachers’ union remains open to negotiations with government before the expiry of their 90 days’ notification that will expire tomorrow.
Over the weekend, Uganda National teachers Union-UNATU called a press briefing at their offices in Kampala and announced that all teachers should prepare for the June 25 industrial action, should government fail to meet their demands. UNATU also wants a written commitment from government stopping discrimination in pay between science and arts teachers.
The UNATU Chairman Rubanda branch Anthony Musasizi Mugambagye asked UNATU secretariat to start a counseling and guidance policy to help teachers who get problems on job.
