RUKIGA RESIDENTS LYNCH UPDF SOLDIER

The Police in Rukiga district have arrested three people that were part of an angry mob that lynched a UPDF soldier attached to the operation wealth creation.
The police spokesman for Kigezi Region Mr Elly Maate said that the incident happened on March 8 at a local bar owned by Mr David Byamukama located at Kabugarama trading center in Kamwezi sub county in the same district.
He identified the deceased as L/Cpl Henry Muhwezi, a resident of Nyamirama cell Rwenyanja parish Kamwezi sub county. He was lynched by angry residents of the same area after they accused him of allegedly stabbing in the chest and injuring one of their colleagues only identified as Byamukama.
Mr Maate said that the local residents quickly mobilised means of transport and rushed the injured person to a health center in the neighboring Rubaare sub county in Ntungamo district for treatment.
The angry residents then pounced on the UPDF soldier and beat him up. He was rescued by the police that took him to Bukinda health center in Rukiga district where he was later pronounced dead and his body was taken to Kabale regional referral hospital for post-mortem.
Mr Maate said that the arrested suspects included Ms Anet Kyarikunda the wife to the owner of the bar where the misunderstanding started, Dickson Arija and Ben Arineitwe.
Mr Maate said that the case has been registered at Rukiga police station under CRB 198/2018 as police investigations into the matter continue.
He warned the public against acts of mob action arguing that the residents should have reported the matter to the police and the UPDF soldier be arrested and charged accordingly. He added that all those that were involved in the lynching of the soldier shall be arrested and charged with murder.
