In Rukungiri—
Rukungiri district CAO Elias Byamungu has directed all sub county authorities to protect public land from encroachers and grabbers.
He asked the leaders to be vigilant about these lands since they are the custodians of public land on sub county level.
However, Emmy Agaba Rubondo the Buyanja sub county LCIII chairperson said some of the public land has been grabbed by high-ranking officials whose names he did not want to disclose, citing the land in Rubanga parish.
Wednesday Twinomujuni the Nyakishenyi sub county boss told our reporter that the most affected lands are located in Omukebiti, Kafunjo parish as well as Iterero.
The major activities carried out on these pieces of land are farming and settlement.
Twinomujuni challenged residents who are occupying public land illegally to vacate before action is taken.
Gershom Kwizera the sub county chief for Buhunga subcounty wondered how individuals occupied some of the public land that was meant for communal grazing.
According to Kwizera, the occupants used the advantage of the outbreak of foot and mouth disease that forced farmers to shun communal grazing to avoid the spread of the disease.
The most affected public land in Buhunga Sub County is found in Buhunga parish and it measures about 37 acres.
