In Rukungiri—
The Resident District Commissioner (RDC) of Rukungiri District, Mr
Martin Mugabe, has suspended the distribution of perennial crops
(coffee, Tea) supplied under government’s Operation Wealth Creation
(OWC) programme.
Mr Mugabe said the perennials supplied in the district at this time
are set to dry because rains are coming to the end, adding that OWC
officials have for long ignored advice from the district authorities
before supplying agriculutural inputs under the programme.
“We have agreed as district leaders to have all supplies of crops
stopped until the next season of rains, we can not to see further
crops dry under rack and behind kitchen because farmers are waitning
for rains to set in” he said.
Mr Zepher Karyeija, the district production coordinator, confirms to
the suspension of the supplies say “lots of government money has been
lost due to bad timing of supplies”.
“It will not serve the intended purpose if we go ahead and supply the
perennial crops,” he said.
According to Mr Katebire Andrewson, District chairperson, these are
our people if we lobby and what we lobby withers away that means we
are not working for the betterment of people.
“we shall accept other supplies like cassava, banana stucks that are
being given out because for them they can stand the weather now until
rains come but for perennials, that one is out,” he said.
