RUKUNGIRI RESIDENTS CHOKE ON FOUL SMELL FROM HUMAN WASTES DUMPED IN POLYTHENE BAGS
In Rukungiri—
Rukungiri Municipality is choking on a foul smell from rotting garbage.
The municipality is littered with heaps of garbage and human excreta dumped in street alleys in polythene bags.
The municipality is characterized with dilapidated buildings with a poor sewerage system.
Edward Rwakasisi, a business man at Republic road in Rukungiri town told our reporter that behind his business house has turned into a defecting place saying that every morning he founds heaps of human wastes and used up condoms a thing that worries his life.
Allen Mujuni, a businesswoman in Rukungiri town, said it is becoming normal for people in the municipality to use the street alleys as urinals, adding that municipal authorities have failed to put lights, which gives chance to wrong doers.
The municipal officials seem to be victims of poor planning resulting from lack of capacity to effectively handle physical planning, development, hygiene and sanitation of the town.
Rukungiri Town Clerk, Hajj Badru Mayanja acknowledged the problem of waste management and blamed it on the poor attitude of residents.
He explained that residents who sleep in the town have a tendency of easing themselves in polythene bags alias fly toilets and dumping them in the street alleys posing a great danger of disease outbreak like cholera and dysentery.
Charles Makuru, the Mayor Rukungiri municipal council, noted that their research shows that a number of buildings lack toilet facilities, which forces the residents to use polythene bags to answer nature’s call. He however, warned to crack down on the culprits anytime soon.
