The increasing rate at which people commit suicide in Rukungiri district is causing concern among members of the community and leaders.
Information obtained from Rukungiri central Police station, Rukungiri District reveals that at least 12 residents have committed suicide since the month of March.
The gloomy picture is not helped by the fact that the world health organization ranks Uganda as 11th in the whole world in deaths by suicide
In a span of just 4 months; one suicide was reported in Nyakagyeme Sub County, one in Bwambara Sub County and another one in Kebison Sub County
.
Three people committed suicide in Nyarushanje sub county one in each of the sub counties of Buyanja, Buhunga, western division, Bugangari, and Eastern division Rukungiri municipality.
The Community Development Officer Rukungiri Mr. Posius Nemesius attributed these suicides to poverty whereby heads of families become hopeless when they are unable to provide for their families and end up committing suicide.
He urged people to engage in productive activities like farming which help them earn money, reduces idle time, and take limited alcohol.
