RUKUNGIRI: SPEEDING VEHICLE KNOCKS ONE DEAD, DRIVER ON RUN

Police in Rukungiri District are hunting for a driver of a Taxi Reg. No UBB 568A who knocked dead a pedestrian.

The deceased who was identified as Abias Akankwasa aged 42 a resident of Kabashaki village in Eastern Ward of Kebisoni Town Council, was on 10^th .Dec2019 at 9:21pm knocked dead at Rwabiganguro Trading Center along Rukungiri – Ntungamo Road in Kebisoni Town Council.

Kigezi Region Police Spokesman Elly Maate told our reporter that immediately after the accident the unidentified driver of the vehicle ran away and abandoned it.

The vehicle was towed away to Rukungiri Central Police Station awaiting inspection.

“We are hunting for the driver and he will be charged according to the laws” Maate said.

He said that the body of the deceased was taken to Rwakabengo Health Center III Mortuary postmortem done, and handed over to the relatives for burial.

Maate appealed to drivers to respect other road users and be very careful during this festive season to minimize accidents.

He blamed the accident on reckless driving.

The case was registered at Rukungiri Police Station under reference number TAR 71/2019.
