The Rukungiri Municipality Environment office has issued eviction notices to eight wetland encroachers.
The encroachers have an ultimatum of 14 days or they are forcefully evicted and charged in courts of law.
In the notices seen by www.mknewslink.com , the environment office noted that the increase in peoples activities in the wetlands might be the reason as to why the area experiences a long drought spell.
The Municipal Environment officer Laban Kanyangyeyo says that the municipality has been warning the wetland encroachers since last year but they have given it no attention.
Kanyangyeyo cautioned that if the residents dont resist from the habit, they risk getting back to the 2017 disaster where numbers succumbed to hunger and others survived on spear grass.
Unless you vacate these wetlands in the specified time, the municipal officials will forcefully evict you and destroy all your belongings in these areas because they are gazzated and are out of bounds for human activities, Kanyangyeyo warns.
The earmarked wetlands encroached on include Ikona in Southern Division, Rugogo in Eastern Division, Kinyasano stretch in Western Division, Ruwobo and Kataruka wetlands in Southern Division.
Ministry of water and environment statistics shows that Uganda has lost more than 30 percent of the wetlands in the last 23 years.
This trend puts the country at increased risk and vulnerability to natural disasters and other effects of climate change.
