Women in Buyanja sub- county Rukungiri district under their umbrella body Forum for Women in Democracy (FOWODE) have decried the increasing levels of corruption in their area which has affected service delivery.
The issue was raised during the community dialogue organized by FOWODE for sub- county leadership at Kagaata Church of Uganda in Buyanja sub- county Rukungiri district.
Women complained that they are sidelined on the local government contracts committees, asked for bribes when seeking jobs, unequal distribution of agricultural inputs by the government.
Apophia Kyomugisha, a resident of Buyanja sub- county told the meeting that there is unequal distribution of agricultural inputs by the government saying that instead of giving to the poor they are given to rich and even some receive twice yet others haven’t gained even a single turn.
Kyomugisha added that criteria used by the operation wealth creation officers is also unfair saying instead of supporting many they only support a few leaving others without support.
Moreen Karungi, also a resident of Buyanja says that her daughter went for a job interview and she was told to pay 1m for the job adding that even after paying she was not given the job.
Collins Nyangaro, the FOWODE district coordinator says these community dialogues aim at enabling women to promptly make reports on gaps in service delivery.
According to Nyangaro, he is so optimistic that through community dialogues, corruption and mismanagement of tax payer’s money will reduce in the area thus improved standards of living.
Elide Kananura, the chief at Buyanja sub- County hailed FOWODE for organizing such dialogues saying that they help them to understand what is going wrong in terms of service delivery
Such dialogues are also running in Luweero and Kibuku districts.
