In Kabale—–
A Rwandan soldier has been forcefully disarmed by locals in Kabale district, South Western Uganda.
Locals say the soldier, only identified as Ndagijimana, crossed the border to Uganda through Butanda Sub-county.
It is understood the locals, led by an area leaders swiftly mobilized weapons such as sticks before chasing Ndagijimana.
It remains unclear why Ndagijimana, 27, was running away from his country.
“The soldier was overpowered by locals who later disarmed him,” said a local leader.
Ndagijimana is now being held by local authorities who intend to hand him over to UPDF.
This is not the first time such an incident is happening in the area.
In 2019, Uganda protested against an incursion by Rwandan soldiers on its territory which it said resulted in two deaths.
Two Rwandan soldiers entered Ugandan territory in the southwestern district of Rukiga on Friday in pursuit of a suspected smuggler. They shot dead a Rwandan and a Ugandan, the Ugandan Foreign Affairs Ministry said then.
“Uganda protests in the strongest terms the violation of its territorial integrity by Rwandan soldiers and the criminal, brutal and violent act by the Rwandan soldiers, on Ugandan territory against unarmed civilians,” the ministry said in a statement.
It described the incident as being of “serious concern,” calling it an “incident of murder.”
“The ministry demanded that action be taken against the perpetrators of this attack.”
Relations between Rwanda and Uganda have been strained since 2016 over counter accusations of supporting rival armed movements and trade wars
