SHEEMA DISTRICT CATTLE MARKETS CLOSED OVER FOOT AND MOUTH DISEASE

Sheema District authorities led by the District Veterinary Officer Joseph Amanya have suspended all markets that deal in cattle and its products.
Amanya noted that they decided to suspend all cattle markets after the samples that were taken to Entebbe for examination turned out to be Foot and mouth positive.
Sheema district was first put under livestock quarantine following the suspected cases of foot and mouth disease that were detected in three farms in Kyagyenyi subcounty in the parishes of Muzira and Kagongi.
Sheema RDC Frank Kyerere noted that they had come to the decision following a letter from the permanent secretary of the ministry of agriculture, animal husbandry and fisheries notifying them of suspected foot and mouth in the district, asking them to take action.
Sheema is the second district in greater Bushenyi to be put under total livestock quarantine after Bushenyi district.
Foot and mouth disease has so far been detected in the districts of Mbarara, Kiruhura,Kazo ,Ibanda, Bushenyi and lately Sheema.
