In Sheema—
Sheema district on Monday started registering all elders ageing from 80 years old and above in all sub counties and divisions to start getting a monthly grant under the government’s program for elderly.
According to RDC Sheema district Willy Turyamubona, each registered elder will be getting 25000 shs monthly starting from next month (October) and more than 2500 are likely to be registered.
“Basing on the NIRA registers, we have 2500 elders who are over 80 years but we hope that some died so we expect less number. Whoever didn’t register for the National ID doesn’t qualify for this grant no matter how old is he or she,” the RDC said.
Ever since the government of Uganda introduced this programme, elders from 47 districts have been getting grants however in July this year, more 10 districts such as Sheema, Hoima, Kasese and others were added to the list expanding to a total of 57 districts.
On 1st October 2018, it will be a public holiday for elders where by National celebrations will be at Kabwohe stadium in Sheema district where President Museveni is expected to be the chief guest and is expected to give the money to the beneficiaries.
“On that day, President Museveni will hand in cheques to few elders and all registered ones will start withdrawing their grants from that day using their phones or bank accounts respectively,” Turyamujura said.
Some of the elders who reached at Central division Kibingo for their grant registration thanked President Museveni for remembering them however they said that the grant to be received by them is too little to accommodate their needs.
