SHEEMA FARMERS DEVASTATED AS STRANGE DISEASE ATTACKS PASSION FRUITS
By Onesmus Ndyanabo
In Sheema—
Passion fruit growers in Kyeihara Kasana subcounty Sheema District are worried following a strange disease that has attacked and destroyed their gardens.
Samuel Rutimbirayo one of passion fruit growers said that passion fruit growing is their source of income and they are now worried on how they are to survive.
He added that the new disease dries out the leaves, then hardens the fruit in that it cannot expand and even loses shape.
Rutimbirayo showed his dissatisfaction with their sub county agricultural officer whom he said they labored to have him on ground for the advice but all in vain.
When contacted on the matter, the sub county agricultural officer Stanley Semucho rushed to the garden and explained to our reporter that he has been busy with a lot of people to attend.
He described the disease as a woodness disease that is caused by a virus that comes in the seedlings.
He said once attacked by the disease, the only way out is to uproot, burn and replant. He advised farmers to always contact them for recommendable seedlings when going to plant.
