In Kisoro—
A 16 year old pupil at Rubuguri Primary School, Rubuguri Town Council in Kisoro district has given birth Wednesday morning.
The girl, whose identity is withheld because she is a minor, was in Primary Six, and gave birth to a baby boy after being rushed to the neighbouring Rubuguri Health Centre IV.
Sources indicates that school authorities have been suspecting the girl to be pregnant, but others thought it was her size.
The girl reportedly arrived at school at around 8 am, but told her colleagues and a female teacher that she had stomachache a few moments after entering class. The pupil is said to have been taken to a separate room for resting and given some drinking water upon her request.
Another source says that the teachers waited for a few moments and noticed that the girl was showing signs of labour, thus rushing her to Rubuguri Health Centre IV.
“When the teacher went back, the girl was making an alarm and some fluids were visible. We had to rush her to the hospital” A source said.
It is said that the girl has been staying with her grandmother in Higabiro village, Rubuguri Town Council since her parents divorced some years ago. Her parents reportedly both live in Kampala.
The school authorities have since contacted the grandmother to be the caretaker for the young mother at the hospital.
However, a source says that out of shcok, the head teacher made a prompt report at Rubuguri Police Station, and was to file a report to Kisoro District Education Department.
Thousands of girls were reported to have become pregnant during the COVID-19 lock-down which left schools closed for almost 2 years. As the government reopened schools, the Education Ministry guided that both breastfeeding and pregnant pupils be allowed back into the class.
