SHODDY WORKS ON NTUNGAMO-MIRAMA HILLS ROAD IRK LEADERS

The Ntungamo municipality authorities are up in arms with the Zhongmei construction company which was contracted for the Ntungamo- Mirama Hills-Kagitumba road over shoddy works.

Municipal councilor led by Beinomugisha Elias Kaniabe the Kyamate Ward councilor petitioned UNRA last week over poor road design saying that they want the works on Kaguta road being worked on as part of the contract for the Ntungamo Mirama Hills road be redone after several sections were found to have been poorly done.

Mr. Beinomugisha who is also secretary for finance Ntungamo municipal council, the Kyamate ward councilor said the construction without a roundabout and widening of the road at the Mirama road junction will increase accidents in town and make the road more unwanted like the one previously there.

This caused an impromptu  meeting on Wednesday 19^th April 2017 after a section of the municipality councilors signed a petitioned the executive director National Roads authority to have two roundabout junctions fixed on the road, one at the Mirama Hills raod junction and the other at the Kaguta- Mbarara road junction.

They accuse the contractor Zhongmei and UNRA for failing to evict the people formerly compensated to have the road works done and the road expanded during the construction opting for the original road boundaries an issue that makes the road less convenient and businesses less accessible.

The municipal authorities including the town Mayor Mr. Jacob Kafureka Jaka Jex, the Municipal town clerk Mr. Christopher Ahimbisibwe and councilors said several sections of the road were done in a way that they make the town inaccessible while others have not been done according to the town plan calling for revision.

Kafureka said the UNRA was responsible for poor workmanship of the contractor as several pleas by the municipality officials to have a meeting with them and the contractor earlier hit a snag and they have now come to meet them when the works are almost complete.

The UNRA project Engineer Mr. Paddy Ahimbisibwe said most of the demands of the municipality were not captured in the original contract and the memorandum of understanding between the contractor and the municipal authorities.

However the municipal authorities said they had never signed a memorandum of understanding with the contractor and neither did they know that there was requirement for such.
