Leaders for the National Unity Platform in Kigezi subregion have asked the electoral commission officials to engage the RDCs and police over harassment of its members.
Jasper Ayebare the chief coordinator National Unity Platform (NUP) in the Kigezi subregion said that last week 9 of their members were arrested as they were in Kanungu district to vet flag bearers, giving out membership cards and collecting signatures to allow Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi wine to contest for presidency come 2021.
He noted that NUP as a political party should be allowed space to converse for support and fairly compete in elections noting that most opposition parties have not been allowed to compete fairly in the elections.
Addressing the media on Thursday at party offices in Mbarara city, Jolly Mugisha the deputy president for western region National Unity Platform said that all campaign materials such as T-shirts, posters, membership cards were confiscated by security officials during arrests which he said violates their rights.
Jolly is now appealing to electoral commission to direct police to release their campaign materials with immediate effect as they are heading for the 2021 general elections.
