The North Kigezi diocese acting Bishop Rt. Rev. Emeritus Patrick Tugume has asked leaders not to push government hard to open schools as this may aggravate the spread of COVID-19.
Preaching at the burial of the late Eric Kasimbazi, father to the Rukungiri municipality MP Elisa Rutahigwa at Rwanyanja church of Uganda, Bishop Tugume said leaders need to focus on educating the public on prevention measures other than asking government to open schools and other key economic sectors.
He was reacting to remarks by the Kinkizi West MP James Kaberuka who said people need to support MPs pushing for reopening of schools.
Kaberuka said the failure to open schools is simply leaving behind children of poor people as those of rich people go to international schools that remain open, an issue that will widen the gap between the poor and the rich in a few years to come.
He said as some few MPs they will start a bigger move to meet the president and justify opening of the schools.
Other MPs Medius Natukunda Kaharata, Naome Rwebyambu, Dr. Nicholas Kamara, Naboth Namanya attended the function.
Kasimbazi died at 96 surviving by a wife and 14 children. He is remembered for being one of the first preschool teachers, businessmen and strong church pillars of the past century.
