In Masindi—-
Sugar cane farmers in Masindi under their umbrella Masindi Sugarcane Farmers Association Limited (MASGAL) have petitioned the office of the Resident District Commissioner RDC Masindi requesting his office to intervene and resolve the sugar payment Impasse.
The letter dated 5th October 2018 was copied to the Minister of Trade and Industry and cooperatives, Minister of security and the permanent secretary Ministry of Trade.
The letter indicated that the final payment for 2017/18 and the sugar cane price for 2018/19 have never been determined. It further explained that the price for 2018/19 should have been determined by 1st July 2018 while the final payment should have been made by September 2018.
Addressing journalists shortly after delivering the petition, Cosmasa Byaruhanga, the Chairperson Masindi Sugarcane Growers Association Limited (MASGAL), noted that efforts to harmonize with Kinyara sugar limited are futile since Kinyara has remained adamant adding that they now are demanding 9 billion Ugandan shillings for final payment.
Byaruhanga added that if central government doesnt intervene they are going to suspend cane supply to Kinyara explaining that they have pleaded with Kinyara but all in vein.
Kinyara Sugar factory has been in recess for close to one month and it is expected to open very soon.
