People with disabilities in Uganda are demanding for recruitment into security forces since they can ably serve their country.
This was revealed yesterday by Ronald Ruyima; the programs officer for National Union of disabled persons of Uganda at National White cane day celebrations that were held at Kyamate playground in Ntungamo district.
The International White Cane Day is celebrated worldwide on 15 October every year with the mission to educate the world about blindness and how the visually impaired can live and work independently while giving back to their communities, to celebrate the abilities and successes
achieved by blind people in a sighted world and to honor the many contributions made by the visually impaired.
Ruyima said that despite government preaching equality of every person, during recruitments of police and army people with disabilities are left out yet if given opportunity and training they can serve.
The National Chairman for Uganda National Association of the Blind UNAB Kugumikiriza Ntege asked government to subsidies on the prices of equipment used by people with disabilities and their movement and work.
He also asked President Yoweri Museveni to name a Minister in charge of people with disabilities and who should be having disabilities.
The coordinator of the Visual impaired department at Oyster and pearls Uganda; a nongovernmental organization revealed that at least 34,000 Ugandans become blind yearly. He said that government needs to emphasize teaching sight victims science, technology, engineering, and mathematics to be able to compete with others.
The Ntungamo district Chairman; Denis Singahakye who presided over the function pledged to budget for needs of PWDs in the next budget. He also said he will advocate for ensuring PWDS get their own school in Ntungamo district.
