Police in Hoima district on Monday 7th Sept.2020 morning used teargas to disperse Alliance for National Transformation-ANT, Forum for Democratic Change-FDC and National Union Platform- NUP supporters in Hoima West division.
Supporters of the three parties had converged at the FDC office in Duhaga Roundabout in Hoima West Division for a planning meeting ahead of the 2021 general elections.
A team of heavily armed policemen, with anti-riot gear led by the Hoima district police commander SP Martin Okoyo stormed the premises and sealed off the venue before firing teargas to disperse the group.
Five members of the National Union Platform-NUP and Alliance for National Transformation were arrested in the process and taken to Hoima Central Police Station.
Julius Hakiza, the Albertine region police spokesperson says police were not notified about the meeting, yet the group was not following the measures that were put in place by the ministry of health to prevent the spread of Coronavirus.
He added that police were forced to fire teargas to disperse them since they had become rowdy and unmanageable.
It is alleged that the meeting was going to be chaired by Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, the National Unity Platform Principal and champion of the People Power pressure group.
