TEAR GAS ROCKS RUKUNGIRI AS POLICE DISPERSE SUPPORTERS OF FDC’S INGRID AFTER HER NOMINATION ON INDEPENDENT TICKET

Tear gas yesterday rocked Rukungiri town as police clashed with the supporters of Ingrid Kamateneti Turinawe while she returned from the nomination center after being nominated to run for the Rukungiri municipality parliamentary seat on independent ticket.
Kamateneti who is a strong supporter and founder of Forum for Democratic change (FDC) party together with Hon. Mugume Rolland Kaginda, the incumbent lost the flag to Dr. Wallen Tumwine a new political entrant in the party primary elections that were held in late August.
Kamateneti was nominated at 3:10 pm. Shortly after being nominated, Kamateneti told journalists that she is rooting to streamline service delivery which has been a big problem to the development of Rukungiri municipality.
It all started when police tried to block Kamateneti supporters from accompanying her as she was from the nomination center that is at Rukungiri district headquarters heading to her home in farmers cell, Western division Rukungiri municipality.
Police first blocked Kamateneti’s convey at the entrance gate of the district, this somehow paralyzed transport in town but she was later allowed to continue to her home escorted by the police car.
Henry Kintu, the Rukungiri District Police Commander, said as police they won’t allow candidates to conduct conveys saying that anyone caught will be charged by the law accordingly.
Kintu also cautioned politicians against violating special operating procedures (SOPs) saying that politicians are well informed that COVID-19 is still in the country therefore they should stand warned
At around 4;00 pm, a group of Kamateneti’s supporters gathered at her home and started blowing whistles, dancing her political song a thing that forced the police to use tear gas to disperse them and the car that was carrying sound machines was impounded and taken to the police.
Dan Kaguta, the Rukungiri Resident District Commissioner said that they are going to organize a meeting with all politicians in the district to harmonize on the way of conducting campaigns.
