‘THERE IS NO NEED FOR TEACHERS STRIKE’—–SAYS SISTER TEACHERS UNION, ULTU
By Wilber Muhwezi Kasibante and Agencies
In Kampala-
Uganda liberal teacher’s union [ULTU] a sister teachers union through its president General Kaganizo Mutesasira has revealed to www.mknewslink.com Editor that there was no need for UNATU and other labor organizations to announce a teachers’ strike that began on May 20, 2019.
Mr. Mutesasira together with ULTU secretary general Mr.Erima Jackson noted that the strike is unnecessary because currently there are other pressing issues that should be attended to first.
He added that UNATU is trying to target media attention rather than addressing real issues affecting teachers from pre-primary to secondary.
Mr. Mutesasira said in a press release signed together with his secretary general that there is a lot of corruption at district service commissions and education service commission during appointment and promotion of teachers. He noted that this and others must be dealt with first rather than a strike.
He concluded that UNATU never at any time consulted ULTU before the industrial action was affected. However www.mknewslink.com has learnt that the two teacher organizations are sworn enemies.
Mutesasira who hails from Bushenyi district is one of the founders of UNATU but about eight years ago fell out with UNATU leaders because of what he called poor methods of work and not focused ideas.
