THEY ARE SO CONFUSED—FR. GAETANO ATTACKS GOV’T FOR EVICTING UGANDANS FROM WETLANDS

In Kabale—
The Outspoken Catholic priest who is also the vice chairperson Kick corruption of Uganda Kabale branch Fr. Gaetano Batanyenda has lashed at the government for the confusion of evicting Ugandans from wetlands without compensating them.
The Ministry of Water and Environment in partnership with the Environment Protection Police Unit (EPPU), issued a warning to all people using wetlands to evacuate from them effective this year.
Now according to Fr. Batanyenda, the then government in the 1960s allocated wetlands to some residents and was charged lots of money but it’s shameful that the government is evicting innocent Ugandans without any compensation.
Speaking to the media at Kick corruption out of Kigezi in Kabale municipality on Thursday Fr. Batanyenda said that most of people sold off their hilly lands while hunting for money to buy the wetlands from government.
He wondered where they will now go if they are evicted adding that it’s injustice act and government should provide compensation to all Ugandans who have land titles.
He added that many wetland users, especially in the Kigezi region, have their land titles which were provided to them by the government while buying them.
Batanyenda noted that if it was the rich people using these wetlands the government would not tamper with them because the current leadership needs to revamp the poor Ugandan.
He however challenged the ruling government for being unfair and unbalanced during these evictions by providing compensation to the rich only while ignoring the poor all over the country.
