THREE DRC REFUGEES ARRESTED FOR STONING POLICE OFFICERS

Three asylum seekers have today been arrested on allegations of stoning security officers during yesterday operation to push refugees from the borderline after their failure to register and join Nyakabande transit center.
The operation was carried out yesterday morning at 4:00am remove all the refugees who were camping in Kibaya land and Bunagana market.
The Kisoro district police commander Musisi Richard confirmed the arrest of the suspects but did not reveal their particulars. He said that police used reasonable force to arrest the three suspects as they threw stones at police officers who conducting the operation
Musisi Richard said that the suspects are being held at Kisoro police station waiting to be arraigned in courts of law.
He cautioned residents against hosting asylum seekers in their homes saying it is illegal.
He revealed that the operation will continue for about 3 to 4 days until all the asylum seekers are pushed out of borderline.
Some asylum seekers agreed to be taken to Nyakabande transit center while others opted to return back to their home country in Rutshuro through Busanza border.
Those who returned back to their home country gave an excuse that there is no enough food in Nyakabande Transit center.
Kisoro RDC Hajji Shafiq Ssekandi said that over 3000 asylum seekers decided to return back in their home country DR Congo while over 5000 were today transported to Nyakabande transit camp. Sekandi noted that the operation will continue until all illegal asylum seekers are pushed out of border towns and from homes of residents.
Meanwhile, mayor Bunagana town council Ndayambaje Ismail praised security team for the successful operation of getting rid of the asylum seekers that were camping in Bunagana market and Kibaya land. He requested government and other stakeholders to support Bunagana town council in cleaning the area.
