Police in Rukungiri have arrested three Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) staff members in connection to the killing of their colleague during an operation to arrest poachers in Bwambara, Rukungiri District.
The arrested have been identified as Sgt Kisembo Jimmy, Cpl. Niwanyijuka Nicholas, and Pte. Ewuku Emmanuel all attached to Queen Elizabeth National Park.
According Elly Maate, the Kigezi Regional Police Spokesman , the circumstances under which Asasira was killed remained mysterious because the UWA staff who were with him in the operation, failed to explain how he was shot.
We want to establish exactly how Sgt. Assasira was shot with a pistol because it is not clear if the poachers were armed. Also the cartridges found at the scene were from a pistol that belonged to UWA Maate said.
Sgt. Asasira Philemon was on Friday last week shot dead during the operation to recover illegal ivory.
The operation followed a tip that there were people planning to sell off ivory tusks.
The UWA rangers went in; disguising as buyers, but the operation didnt go as planned and ended in a gun fire exchange.
Asasira was shot in stomach and rushed to Nyakibale Hospital where he was declared dead on arrival.
Earlier, the Police arrested one Sabiiti at whose residence the scuffle from which Asasira was shot took place.
