Ntungamo District was plunged into mourning yesterday when two dedicated councilors lost their lives in a tragic road accident. The incident occurred along the Mbarara-Kabale highway, approximately 4 kilometers from Ntungamo town.
The victims of this heart-wrenching accident were Niwagaba Pius Tusimire, the Local Council V councilor for Nyarutuuntu sub-county, and Kutamba Monic Rutabingwa, the lady councilor for LCV Ngoma sub-county and secretary for works. The fateful accident took place around 4 pm as they were traveling in a Toyota Wish registration number UBH 873G.
Eyewitnesses recounted the horrifying sequence of events. Niwagaba, who was driving the Toyota Wish, was allegedly speeding despite the rainy conditions. As they approached a box body motor vehicle registration number UBD 660V from Nile Agro Industries, which was coming from Rubaare, Niwagaba attempted to brake abruptly. This sudden maneuver caused the vehicle to skid uncontrollably, veering into the lane of oncoming traffic and colliding with the box body vehicle. Tragically, both councillors lost their lives on the spot.
The Uganda Police in Ntungamo swiftly responded to the scene, recovering the bodies of the deceased and transporting them to Itojo Hospital for a post-mortem examination.
Samuel Mucunguzi Rwakigoba, the Ntungamo District chairman, expressed deep shock and sorrow over the loss of two councillors who had been pillars of their communities since May 18, 2021. He noted that their dedication and transparency in serving their constituents had earned them the respect and admiration of all.
