TRINITY COLLEGE STUDENTS STAGE STRIKE, 13 ARRESTED

IN KABALE
Police in Kabale district have arrested 13 male students of Kabale
Trinity College in Kabale Municipality for participating in a violent
strike at the school.
The strike started yesterday evening with students protesting the
failure by the school to prepare their usual weekend meal comprising
of matooke and cabbage. The school prepared posho, sweet potatoes, and
beans which students claim were rotten.
Students also accuse the school administration led by teacher Bruce
Ariho for harassing them and tearing as well as confiscating their trouser
uniforms without clear explanation.
The students went on rampage and destroyed school property that
include window glasses of the school’s dormitory, furniture, utensils
are among the property destroyed. The situation was saved by the
intervention of the Anti Riot police that shot live bullets in the air
to disperse the violent students.
Kigezi Regional Police Spokesperson Elly Maate says that the arrested
are being held at Kabale Central Police Station. Maate adds that
police will maintain its presence at the school to avert a resumption
of the strike. He adds that the arrested students will be charged with
malicious damage.
school Director, Joab Tumwebarize admits that the school had not
prepared cabbages due to failure by the supplier to supply them last
weekend. He also says that the students especially senior four
candidates staged a strike so that they can be suspended and avoid
sitting for Mock examinations.
