In Hoima—
Two people have drowned in a shallow well in Hoima district. The deceased have been identified as Emmanuel Ondoma 22 and Wilson Drasiko 25, both residents of Mbaraara village in Bulyango Parish in Kitoba sub county Hoima district.
The two met their death around 12pm on Tuesday. Julius Hakiza, the Albertine Region Police Spokesperson says the duo was contracted by Erikana Asiimwe to dig a shallow well at his home.
He explains that when the duo reported for work, they entered the 60ft deep shallow well that they had dug.
Hakiza says that as they continued digging the shallow well, water emerged from underground. He says the two drowned and could not fight for their dear lives anymore.
He explains that residents became suspicious after waiting for the duo to come out of the shallow well in vain. They immediately alerted Hoima police, which rushed to the scene but couldn’t do much before the two were already dead.
Hakiza says that the officers couldn’t retrieve the bodies without the help of divers who had to be brought in from Kampala on Wednesday morning. He says the work of retrieving the bodies begun today morning when the divers arrived at the scene.
Jacob Tumwesige, a resident of Mbarara village, says that the death of the two youths is a big blow to the community in the area. The incident comes only two days after a Prison warder and an inmate died in a septic tank in Masindi district. The deceased warder and inmate were identified as Corporal Abel Owori and Samuel Rubalire respectively.
The inmate had entered the septic tank to clean the sewerage channel and went through the tank where he suffocated. After noticing that the inmate was unconscious, Owori entered the septic tank to rescue him where he also suffocated to death.
