A group of angry residents are up in arms against two former ministers and a member of parliament who allegedly infringed on electoral commission guidelines and conducted public rallies.
The trio are; Henry Banyenzaki, the former State Minister for Economic Monitoring, Hebert Kabafunzaki, former State Minister for Labour, Employment and Industrial Relations and Henry Ariganyira Musasizi, MP Rubanda, also the Chairperson for Parliamentary Finance Committee.
Banyenzaki intends to contest in Rubanda west county, Musassizi is seeking the third term in Rubanda east county while Kabafunzaki is seeking the second term in Rukiga County.
The Electoral commission recently banned political rallies as a preventive measure against the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The commission advised that all campaigns be conducted through radios, TVs, social media among others.
However, the Rubanda east legislator Aringanyira Musasizi spent the whole of last week openly addressing rallies in Mpungu Hamurwa sub-county, Rubanda district.
During the rallies, Musasizi ordered NRM voters not to vote him back if they are not willing to vote the aspiring candidate of his choice “Stephen Ampeire Kasyaba” on Rubanda District LC5 Chairmanship.
Banyenzaki on Sunday conducted a rally at Ruhija Catholic Social Centre in
Ruhija sub-county, Rubanda district where he said that Rubanda west county
has declined in development due to bad representation.
Kabafunzaki also on Sunday conducted several rallies in Kamwezi sub-county, Rukiga district where he begged voters to vote him for the second term.
But, concerned residents say that the three leaders should have respected the guidelines and not put voters at risk of contracting Covid-19.
Anthony Sabitti a resident of Murambo village in Bubaare sub-county and James Kabatereine, a voter from Mpungu parish in Hamurwa sub-county say that conducting gatherings by such politicians is completely wrong and attempted murder according to how President Yoweri Museveni directed.
They wonder why such politicians defy directives on public gatherings yet they are the ones in position to advise locals to keep safe.
Laulian Mugisha, a voter from Kamwezi sub-county wonders why such politicians don’t emulate religious leaders who have followed guidelines of not opening places of worship as a spirit of preventing their followers
from contracting Covid-19.
Mugisha says that it is unfortunate to see such politicians failing to be lead examples by refraining from holding public gatherings.
Banyenzaki says that those arguing are influenced by his opponents after realizing that he has returned with strong support.
Peter Rwakifari, Rubanda Resident District Commissioner and Purikeria Muhindo Mwiine, Rukiga Resident District Commissioner say that they have not received any information about the trio holding rallies in their respective constituencies.
