Two suspected Rwanda Defense Forces (RDF) soldiers have been arrested in Kamwezi Sub County in Rukiga district in western Uganda.
The arrested are Bosoce Ishimwe and Peter Sanvura, both residents of Tabarwe in Nyagatare district in Rwanda.
The two were captured on Sunday alongside a Ugandan Silva Muhwezi, a resident of Kamwezi.
A security official said on condition of anonymity that the suspects were arrested by a joint team of Uganda Police Force and Uganda Peoples Defense Forces (UPDF) soldiers.
The source said the suspects crossed into Uganda under the guise of attending Muhwezi’s birthday party at Mpororo trading centre in Kiruhura village.
He however, said the suspects instead went to Rwamatunguru Catholic church to spy on what was going on.
Ugandan security, which had been monitoring their movements swung into action, held them and whisked them away in a UPDF vehicle under tight security to unknown location.
Richard Ecega, the Kigezi Region Police Commander and the Kigezi Region police spokesperson, Elly Maate declined to comment and instead referred URN to Uganda Police Spokesperson, Fred Enaga who couldn’t be reached.
The arrest of the two suspected spies comes a few days after the shooting dead of two people by Rwandan soldiers in Kamwezi.
An unidentified Rwandan soldier shot dead a Rwandan John Batista Nkyerengye as well as Alex Nyesiga Atuheire a Ugandan on Friday evening last week over suspected smuggling.
Tensions between the two countries have continued to rise ever since Rwanda closed its borders to Uganda on accusations of hosting dissidents plotting to overthrow President Paul Kagame’s government.
