UMEME LOSES 29B UGX TO SCRAP DEALERS; 5 STAFF IMPLICATED

UMEME Uganda Limited has reportedly lost over 26 billion shillings to vandalism in 2021.
Speaking during a partnership meeting between security and UMEME at Hotel Triangle in Mbarara city yesterday, Katewanga UMEME Head of Regional Operations in charge Of Western region said that western Uganda is the worst hit region with 72%.
Katewanga attributed the vice to mushrooming unregulated scrap dealers who steal equipment such as electric conductors so that they can recycle them.
He further noted that they are aware that some of their technical staff are part of the vice adding that five of them have already been held accountable.
He however said that they are looking forward to educating the masses about the dangers of tampering with electricity and punishment given to those caught Vandalizing electric equipment.
He is now appealing to security teams to help them and apprehend people who vandalize electric equipment.
