The Resident District Commission Sheema district Frank Kyereere has described UMEME Company as typical thieves.
Kyereere said this on Thursday 7th March 2019 while commissioning electricity project in Rugarama Sub County Sheema district.
Kyereere said that UMEME workers are the super thieves of electricity even though they claim that their bosses are.
He noted that they connive with some people especially the rich whom they give electricity illegally.
The RDC revealed that Sheema police have already caught and imprisoned 5 of them for allegedly stealing electric materials, transformers and that among them are UMEME workers.
He noted that its annoying that their bosses are aware of the theft but have refused to take action or go to courts of law.
The Vice Chairman Mr. Mwesigye Elidard added that these people are pure thieves to the extent that they are against government programs of free electricity.
Mwesigye said that on 1st October 2018 , government launched free lighting for all but that UMEME guys demand too much money from people and those who don’t give them the demanded money, can’t be connected which he said he won’t tolerate it anymore.
Venancio Ndyanabo Tumugabirwe Chairman LC 3 Rugarama Sub County noted that he has received so many complaints from locals against UMEME connections.
Eng Samuel Bishop who represented the chief guest, the Cabinet Minister for Energy, advised the residents not to pay more than 20,000 Shs for both inspection and connection.
“Electricity is a back bone of development when used productively. It will serve no purpose to give you electricity and it is not utilized, therefore construct factories, coffee millers, saloons and others,” Samuel Bishop noted.
