UPDF SOLDIER SHOOTS CIVILIAN DEAD, INJURIES COLLEAGUE IN BAR BRAWL

Police in Kisoro are investigating circumstances under which a UPDF soldier attached to Kibaya army detach in Kisoro district killed a civilian and injured a colleague during a bar brawl in Nyarubande village, Rukundo town council.

Elly Maate the Kigezi Regional Police Spokesperson identified the suspect as a Uganda People’s Defense Forces (UPDF) staff no. RA 191534 Private Warimbwa Hamis aged 38years who shot and killed Nizeyimana Zephaniah aged 20 years a resident of Kirwa village, Karambi parish, Nyarubuye Sub County.

Maate identified the victim as RA 256798 PTE Private Achia Wiliam who was also shot in the foot while trying to rescue the suspect from shooting other people.

It’s alleged that on the 02/06/2022 at about 11:30pm while at Friends Pub Pool table and lodge at Rukundo Trading Centre Nyarubuye Sub County, the suspect developed a disagreement over money with the deceased whom he shot in the head and died instantly.

The soldiers were sent on their routine patrol along the borderline with the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

The sources indicate that the suspect RA 191534 PTE Walimbwa Amis was arrested and is still under the custody of UPDF at Kibaya Army detach while his injured colleague RA Achia William was admitted to St. Francis Hospital, Mutolere.

Police were notified, visited and examined the scene and body was taken to Kisoro hospital mortuary for postmortem

The case of murder by shooting was registered at Kisoro Central Police station under reference number CRB: 338/2022.

The Mayor of Rukundo Town Council lever Ndagijimana condemned the killing and advised people to always avoid gathering with soldiers in bars because many of them are drunkards and are very unpredictable after drinking alcohol.
