WESTERN UGANDA CHESS AND SCRABBLE TOURNAMENT KICK OFF AT MUST

Chess and scrabble players in south western region on Tuesday converged at Mbarara University of science and Technology to take part in this years edition.
This is the second edition for the western region chess and scrabble tournament.
Mbarara University of science and Technology which has been the defending champion in seniors retained the 2018 Mbarara open chess and scrabble championship title.
Kihembo Sarah and Murungi Edwin performed excellently for Mbarara University in both events to guide their team win Gold in the seniors category which helped them retain the trophies they won last year.
And in the juniors category Bwengye Leninov from Mbarara Progressive primary school and Tiana Nshuti from Kabateirene Memorial School won Gold for their schools.
The purpose of this competition is to identify talented chess and scrabble players to represent the region in the forthcoming national and international chess events.
Nuwamanya Gillian a regional chess trainers said chess has not yet grown so big because very few schools have introduced it among the games they have , and request the ministry of education and sports to add it to sports games in order for schools roll them out.
Kamu Joseph former chairman of Uganda Chess Federation said chess is an interesting game which can be played by disabled persons and keeps also active takes long time to master saying the young you start the better
