A 19-year-old woman named Shirat Namatongo was apprehended by security personnel at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital on charges of impersonating a medical professional. Working in tandem with law enforcement officers at Mbarara central police station, hospital security caught Namatongo red-handed as she attempted to dress as a pediatric surgical ward health worker in a staff changing area.
Halson Kagure, the hospital’s Public Relations Officer, revealed that the suspect had been deceiving patients and extorting money, thereby damaging the institution’s reputation. She was even observed wearing a clinical coat belonging to a student from Mbarara University.
During interrogation, Namatongo confessed to collaborating with others and admitted her main occupation as a fruit vendor in town. She now faces charges of impersonation, prompting authorities to urge the public to report any individuals demanding payment for hospital services under false pretenses.
The hospital administration emphasized the importance of contacting them directly if approached by anyone claiming to be a medical professional and seeking payment for services, in a bid to prevent similar incidents in the future.
